Escape to the Foothills: Walnut Creek’s Unexpected Wine Revival

Picture this: A tranquil, kid-free afternoon spent sipping award-winning wines, indulging in fabulous food, and taking in breathtaking, panoramic views of Mount Diablo. If you’re imagining a trek out to Napa or Sonoma, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to learn that this perfect getaway is hiding right in our backyard—Walnut Creek.

While Walnut Creek is widely celebrated for its bustling downtown shopping and vibrant dining scene, it isn't usually the first place that comes to mind for wine tasting. But don’t be so surprised! Central Contra Costa County actually boasts a deeply rooted, legendary history of winemaking that dates back nearly two centuries.

A Rich History in the Soil

The Contra Costa region has a longstanding viticulture history, with its very first vines planted in Brentwood all the way back in 1846. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the local wine scene was absolutely booming. In fact, by 1916, Contra Costa County was home to 6,000 acres of grapes, teeming with 2.7 million individual vines.

While historical heavyweights like Antioch, Oakley, and Brentwood often get a lot of the credit, central Contra Costa County—specifically Concord, Clayton, and Walnut Creek—was once the heart of it all. A 1908 letter to the editor in the Pacific Rural Press confirmed this, explicitly identifying the Concord, Clayton, and Walnut Creek sections as "the largest wine producing sections of this county." Around that same era, the nearby Vine Hill area in Martinez alone boasted fifteen wineries.

Like many historic wine regions, Prohibition dealt a devastating blow. While a few resilient vineyards managed to survive—laying the groundwork for iconic producers like Cline Cellars and the multi-generational Viano Vineyards—most of the county’s original vines did not make it.

Decades later, a contemporary renaissance began. The 1990s brought a wave of new plantings back to the county, and by 2011, the Contra Costa Winegrowers Association was established to finally give this distinctive American Viticultural Area (AVA) the widespread recognition it deserves.

Bringing commercial viticulture right back to its historic roots at the foot of Mount Diablo, Shadowbrook Winery was established in Walnut Creek in 2005.
