Nestled in the heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains, Mindego Ridge Vineyard is a place where nature and winemaking converge to create something truly extraordinary. If you're looking for a unique wine-tasting experience that combines breathtaking scenery, fascinating history, and exceptional wines, Mindego Ridge is the place to be.

The Perfect Elevation and Climate

Perched at an elevation of 700 to 950 feet, just 9 miles from the Pacific Ocean, Mindego Ridge benefits from a unique microclimate that sets it apart from other vineyards. The vineyard is surrounded by the natural beauty of redwood forests, with cool ocean breezes moderating the temperature, creating the ideal conditions for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The vineyard’s location, bordered by both the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay, provides a marine influence that is unmistakable in the wines produced here. The warm days and cool nights, coupled with steep hillsides and rocky soils, give the wines a distinct character—crisp acidity, exotic fruit flavors, and a unique minerality that is hard to find elsewhere.

A Rich History and Visionary Founders

Mindego Ridge is more than just a vineyard; it's a testament to the vision and dedication of its founders, Dave and Stacey Gollnick. Inspired by the rich winemaking history of the Santa Cruz Mountains, which dates back to the days of Paul Masson and Martin Ray, the Gollnicks dreamed of creating their own vineyard in this storied region.

After a two-year search, they found the perfect spot during the housing market collapse of 2008—a hillside meadow that would soon become Mindego Ridge. By 2009, they had transformed this blank slate into a thriving vineyard, planting 8.7 acres of Pinot Noir and 1.3 acres of Chardonnay. Their commitment to sustainable dry-farming practices and their deep connection to the land shine through in every bottle they produce.

The Unique Terroir

What sets Mindego Ridge apart is its unique terroir. The vineyard is planted on fractured shale and sandstone, covered with a silty clay loam that ranges from 10 to 18 inches deep. This soil composition, combined with the vineyard's steep 25-30% slope and full East to West exposure, creates a growing environment that is both challenging and rewarding.

The vines here are planted with a variety of Pinot Noir clones, including Dijon clones 114, 115, 667, 777, 828, 943, and Calera. Each clone contributes to the complexity and depth of the wines, resulting in a product that is both precise and focused, with a character that reflects the vineyard's unique location.

A Wine Lover's Paradise

As someone who has had the pleasure of visiting Mindego Ridge Vineyard, I can tell you that it’s not just the wines that make this place special—it's the entire experience. Walking through the vineyard, you can feel the connection between the land, the climate, and the people who pour their hearts into making each bottle. The wines are a true reflection of this relationship, offering a taste of the Santa Cruz Mountains that is both authentic and unforgettable.

Whether you're a seasoned wine enthusiast or just beginning to explore the world of fine wines, Mindego Ridge is a destination that should be on your list. The vineyard's intimate setting, combined with the exceptional quality of its wines, makes for an experience that is both educational and enjoyable.

Plan Your Visit

Located just 40 miles south of San Francisco, Mindego Ridge Vineyard is the perfect day trip for anyone looking to escape the city and immerse themselves in the beauty of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The vineyard’s proximity to other popular spots like Park Hill, Lowry, and Central Park means you can easily make a full day of exploring the area.

If you're ready to discover a hidden gem that offers world-class wines in a stunning natural setting, Mindego Ridge Vineyard is waiting for you. Trust me, once you've experienced the magic of this place, you'll understand why it's one of the best-kept secrets of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Cheers! 🍷
